iOS4 – that is the name of the new iPhone 4.0 operating system.
Just watching live coverage of WWDC 2010 going on right now.
As expected – Steve Jobs has announced the new iPhone – and it’s operating system.
First for the iPad – selling like hotcakes (we all new that). We can expect enhancements to the iBook app. In addition to bookmarking and adding notes – there will be the ability to read PDF documents on this app. Yay!
On to the iPhone – yep, we all saw it a while back on Gizmodo. It is thinner than the old one. Glass on front and back (not sure about this – won’t it get scratched on the back?) Other features include:
- 3.5 inch display
- 800:1 contrast ratio
- retina display (meaning more pixels in a smaller area resulting in crisp and clear images)
- bigger battery for 40% more talk time
- micro sd card
- Apple A4 chip
- new camera system – 5 megapixels, 5x digital zoom, tap to focus, and led flash
- camera will also record HD video
- led flash can stay on during video recording
- and using new iMovie app – you can edit video right on the iphone
- iMovie app will cost 4.99
Other features of iOS4
- multitasking
- folders for apps
- unified inbox for email
- threaded messages for email
- iBooks on iPhone too – can sync with iPad
- all pdf attachements in mail will open in iBooks
- iAds – feature more relevant to developers of apps – as it is a revenue stream for them – starting July 1
And one more thing – VIDEO CHAT! The future is here.
Apple is calling this feature Face Time – picture in picture video calling. Accomplished with a front facing camera. Only over Wifi in 2010 – iPhone 4 to iPhone 4. Seems that cellular carriers (read – AT&T, need to do some work with their networks to handle this).
Very cool!
New iPhone 4.0 will come in black or white. Price with contract is $199 for 16gb and $299 for 32 gb. ATT is offering eligibility to existing iPhone owners for upgrade pricing up to 6 months early – check your wireless accounts. (Price of 8gb iPhone 3GS will be $99)
But when Steve, when can we buy it?
Going on sale June 24, 2010. (pre orders being taken on June 24, 2010)
iOS4 upgrades for free to iPhone 3GS, 3G(limited features), and iPod touch (limited features and not 1st gen) will be available on June 21, 2010.
Fun bumper case in many colors will also be sold. Looks like a silicon bumper that covers the outside edges of phone leaving front and back unprotected.
I can’t wait.
So, what do you think? Is it worth it – and more importantly, will you be making the upgrade?
