iPhone 4G Rumors

by Neena

Today the internet is rife with iPhone 4G rumors .

A few weeks ago Steve Jobs announced the upcoming release of the iPhone 4G OS. The good news was that it would bring many new and anticipated features – including multi-tasking to the the popular device. The bad news is that some of these features would not be available to users of the original model or the 3G model. Logically, this meant that in order to take full advantage of the new OS – a person with older equipment would need to shell out for a new 3GS.

Since I am one those people with an “outdated” phone (3G in my case), this situation gave me pause. I really had to weigh the benefits of the new features with the idea of buying a phone that is now almost one year old – the 3GS came out in the summer of last year – 2009.

Well the recent rash of iPhone 4G rumors – which appear to be substantiated – is now making my decision much easier.

Gizmodo reports that they actually have gotten their hands on a new 4G model (apparently, someone lost it in a bar somewhere near Apple headquarters – uh, I am thinking pink slip here). Given the reputation of Gizmodo and the authentic looking pictures that they have posted – I am inclined to believe them. According to this site this found prototype of the new version includes these features

What’s new

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×460 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

In addition to the above there are also other apparent changes as well.

So – if these iPhone 4G rumors are true – it seems that a new release is imminent. But the big question is when. In my mind I would think that Apple would want to coincide the release of the new OS with the new smartphone model – which would translate to sometime this summer. Also, MacRumors reports that AT&T has put a block on employee vacations for the month of June. This could be a signal that something big – like a new Apple phone – is coming down the pike at that time.

Based on this information, my decision has been made. It is no sweat for me to wait until June to upgrade, and that is exactly what I will do.
