Used Mac Laptops

I honestly do not recommend buying used Mac laptops.

I know that the price tag of a new machine is big – but my preference would be to buy a refurbished mac laptop before buying one that someone is finished with.

The main advantage of buying refurb is that it should come with some type of warranty – if it doesn’t then don’t buy it.

A used model usually does not carry a warranty – and like a used car, you just don’t know what could be wrong with it. Again there are a lot of caveat’s to consider. If you must take this route – it is far better to buy the Apple notebook computer from someone that you know and trust. Perhaps they are upgrading their system and want to pass their perfectly good machine onto someone else. Best case scenario.

Buying used mac laptops online is a bit more risky, to say the least. How will you know if all the components are working as they should? And how much clean up will you have to do before you can “move in”? Doing a thorough check on the background of the seller is very important. If you are looking at services like eBay or Amazon – then checking out the customer feedback ratings is key. Go ahead and email the seller with any questions that you may have – so you know exactly what situation you are getting into.

Some sample questions are as follows, and range from the basic to the nitty gritty:

  • What are the technical specs?
  • How old is the machine?
  • How many owners did this computer have?
  • Did you buy it new or used?
  • What are the upgrades?
  • Has the hard drive ever been replaced?
  • Are there any known problems or issues?
  • Was this particular machine used at home or has it been “on the road” a lot – traveling between work and home or owned by a frequent traveler?
  • Was this used Mac laptop owned by an adult or a kid?
  • Are you offering any warranties on the computer?
